Getting Your Card

GWORLD COVID 19 UPDATE

NEW STUDENTS: All new students taking in person classes must obtain a GWorld Card. Incoming Summer and Fall students should have already received an email invitation to upload a photo (contact us if you didn't receive the photo upload email). Once your photo is approved, you can contact us to request a pickup appointment.

NEW GWorld Cards for FACULTY, STAFF, MFA, UHS, VISITORS, and CONTRACTORS will be issued on an as-needed basis. To request a NEW GWorld Card, please complete this online application. You will next receive an invitation to upload your photo. A GWorld staff member will contact you once the card is ready.

We are temporarily not issuing new ALUMNI, or FRIENDS of FOGGY BOTTOM Cards. Please contact us if you have any question.

REGULAR OPERATIONS INFORMATION

All active members of the George Washington University community are eligible to receive GWorld Cards.

No appointment is necessary to receive your card and it typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes. We experience long lines at the start of each semester, so please allow extra time.

Requirements by Role

Review the specific requirements to get your card based on your role at GW:

You may only have one active card at a time. If you have multiple roles (i.e. you are both student and staff member) at GW you will be issued the card based on your classification in the university Banner database. The higher role determines the type of card you'll receive based on the heirarchy: faculty, staff, student, visitor, contractor, MFA, UHS, alumni, friend.

ID Requirement

Regardless of your role, you must present a valid U.S. government issued photo ID to receive your card.

Accepted Forms of ID

Examples of accepted forms of ID include:

  • Active driver’s license or state ID card issued by any U.S. state or territory
  • Active U.S. passport or passport card
  • Active Canadian drivers license or passport
  • Foreign passport with active U.S. visa
  • Active U.S. green card (permanent resident card)
  • Active U.S. military ID

These items will NOT be accepted as valid IDs:

  • A photocopied ID of any kind
  • An expired ID of any kind
  • High school ID
  • ID from another college or university
  • Foreign passport without U.S. visa
  • Foreign driver's license

GWorld Card Photos

Photo must be from the top of the shoulders to the top of the head with some space above the head and sides. Eyes must be open and visible. Straight face or smile. No props or hand gestures allowed. No shadows on the face, no glare on glasses or red eye.

All photos are taken in accordance with the U.S Department of State Passport Standards. You may only wear a hat or head covering if you wear it daily for religious purposes. Your full face must be visible and your head covering cannot obscure your hairline or cast shadows on your face.

The GWorld Office can send you an electronic copy of your photo upon request, please send us and email from your GW email. We apologize if you do not like your GWorld photo, but unfortunately we do have to charge a $25.00 replacement fee to retake your photo. You can take a new photo when replacing your card for any reason.

Card Usage Policies

Do not punch a hole in your card. A hole punch will destroy your card's functionality and you will be charged $25.00 to replace the card.

Do not lend your GWorld card to anyone else for any reason. Doing so could result in your card being confiscated and disciplinary action for both you and the person you lent your card to.

Review our cardholder usage guidelines to ensure that you use your card properly.

Card Care Recommendations

Keep your card in a secure card case or your wallet to help ensure that you do not lose it.

Try not to bend or put excessive pressure on your card. Doing so could damage the internal card chip and cause your card to stop working.
